Two Birds One Stone – Review

Who: Two Birds One Stone

What: Cafe

Where: 12 Claremont St, South Yarra, Melbourne, VIC

Why: A bloody good brunch and cakes to put your granny to shame

Two Birds One Stone, oh how I dream of your brunch menu. Set away from the main stretch of Toorak Road in the leafy suburb of chilled out South Yarra you’ll find unusual twists on good old Aussie classics. From smashed avo and poached eggs to hot cakes with seasonal fruit, if you want amazing food, lovely service and a delicious cake to take home, Two Birds is your place.

Coffee: These guys have a small but wonderful coffee menu. There’s the option of either white blend or single origin for espresso lovers or if filter’s more your grind then you can choose from Aeropress, batch brew or cold drip. I opted for the Sumatra Lima Putri aeropress and it was a delight. Bold, bright and perfectly brewed, my morning was already off to a good start. My Partner had a latte with the white blend which even her tea-lovers palette enjoyed.

Food: If you think avo, mushrooms and eggs on toast has been done a million times before, you’d be right. Include some delightful haloumi, spinach, roasted tomatoes all with the perfect seasoning and you’ve got yourself a fresh and hearty meal. Two birds endeavor to use seasonal ingredients whenever they can and so tailor their menu to highlight the best local produce.

Their ricotta hotcakes and french toast both looked divine and the ladies sitting across from us were eager to tell me they tasted as good as they looked. I’m not normally the type to choose a sweet breakfast but if I go back I’ll be sure to devour some (and let you know if I was right).

I do have a sweet tooth however so managed to squeeze in a trip to the cake counter to choose a cheesecake brownie which was as rich and gluttonous as it sounds. All of the calories. None of the regrets.

All in all: Just lovely. It’s a pretty spot with cute decor and nice grub. Their service is friendly and the coffee is good so I’m not sure what more you could ask for. The menu wasn’t out of this world crazy but sometimes you just want a good old fashioned big breakfast without any of the trendy trimmings and Two Birds One Stone certainly delivers.
